CBD IN THE NEWS: CBD is Making Waves in Sports, Medicine, and the FDA
CBD – Soon to Be a Household Word with FDA Endorsement
CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, a natural oil derived from marijuana and hemp plants. If current trends continue, CBD will soon become a household word. Reports on miraculous results from ecstatic parents who tried CBD therapy on children suffering from seizure disorders prompted further research into the therapeutic uses for CBD. The FDA has even put out a request for public comments regarding successful CBD therapies, after officially declaring CBD as “beneficial”. Full details are available in this EIN press release from August 22.
Pro Sports and CBD
Professional athletes are endorsing CBD as a benign alternative to the highly addictive prescription drugs so frequently prescribed for pain-killing in the professional sports world. CBD is gaining widespread acceptance for its anti-inflammatory properties. Former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer of Denver Broncos fame is one of many NFL and collegiate athletes leading the charge in CBD education.
Denver Broncos Quarterback on CBD Crusade
Jake Plummer began advocating for CBD as a pain treatment after a fellow NFL player turned him on to CBD oil as an alternative pain management therapy. Plummer had walked away from a lucrative but punishing ten-year career in the NFL, most of it spent with the Denver Broncos.
After enduring hip surgery and dealing with chronic pain in his shoulder and lower back, Plummer was looking for an alternative to the addictive opioids and opiates his doctors were prescribing. Each of these led to more medication prescribed to counteract the side effects that tag along with opioid and opiate use, such as digestion problems and constipation. Plummer was concerned about the tolerance build-up which required him to constantly increase dosages to obtain the same pain-killing effects.
When he abstained from these medications on “bye” weeks, Plummer says he could hardly walk. He found that CBD oil was a superior therapy, non-addictive and natural. He reports that along with its pain relieving properties, his CBD regimen has him feeling calm and self-confident. Plummer stays active with professional handball. The former quarterback says he hasn’t made any drastic changes to his lifestyle regarding diet or exercise, just a few drops of CBD oil every day. Athletes For Care and CBD
Plummer has joined forces with NHL hockey player, former Philadelphia Flyer Riley Cote, to form the non-profit organization Athletes4Care. The A4C team also includes athletes as diverse as extreme snow boarder Greta Gaines, and Billie Jean King’s champion doubles tennis partner Julie Anthony. A host of NFL and collegiate football players are endorsing CBD for the highly effective results they’ve experienced in the treatment of concussion and joint injuries.
CBD vs THC
CBD is not to be confused with THC, the psychoactive component in marijuana which causes euphoria. Non-toxic CBD in marijuana actually counterbalances the mind altering effects of THC. Most CBD on the market now is derived from oil in the hemp plant, which has a very low residual level of THC. Those in the workforce can rest assured that CBD used alone, won’t cause a failed drug test, since THC is the targeted psychoactive marijuana component in those tests.
Why is CBD so Effective for So Many Ailments? We’re All Pre-wired For CBD
CBD is proving itself as an effective treatment for an incredible variety of human ailments and disorders. New and exciting research, most of it sponsored by the federal government, has led to the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. This amazing discovery has revealed that mammalian brains and nervous systems actually synthesize and use CBD naturally.
That’s right, our bodies already synthesize CBD molecules naturally. Scientists call this “endogenous”. When we use CBD we are merely supplementing a shortage of the naturally occurring or “endogenous” substance to compensate for deficiencies caused by stress, injury, or environment. The brain’s CBD receptors use CBD to regulate mood, sleep, cognitive function, and healing and immune response. Feedback CBD receptors are also present in nerves and cells, resulting in a two-way communication system to maintain proper chemical balance throughout the entire body.
The discovery of the ECS explains why CBD is so successful in the treatment of such diverse ailments as tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), high blood pressure, psychosis, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinsons and Alzheimers, arthritis, joint inflammation, digestive disorders, and more. Recent research into CBD’s superior antioxidant properties suggests that it may be an effective therapy for fighting cancer.
With such a wide range of beneficial uses, it’s easy to understand why CBD might soon become a household word, as well known and familiar as aspirin.
